Teacher Spotlight – Donna Struthers

Have you had a chance to meet our teacher Donna Struthers? If not then here is your chance!

My goal in teaching is, first of all, to send students home with the finished project pictured in the class description.
Perhaps more important is teaching the skills so that students will be able to reproduce their work at home or in the studio, and to be able to build on the knowledge gained in class to add to their list of jewelry making skills.
Many techniques have what might be called ‘crossover possibilities’ – if you consider that the technique you just learned for making a bracelet could be tweaked just a bit to make a great pendant or a pair of earrings you have actually learned a useful technique, not just the directions for making one project. Each class will include ideas to keep the creativity going, and to realize what else may be possible with the same materials and techniques.
Making jewelry can be seen as a series of questions or problems- what to do if the hole in the bead is too large, too small, the wire is too thin, the earring is too heavy, the bracelet doesn’t fit right.  There are some ‘rules’ that have shortcuts, and some that do not. The bewildering array of tools available can be overwhelming- we’ll discuss what tools are really necessary to complete your project, and which ones you can get by without.
Oops, and not to forget rule number one: Have fun in class!!!
Happy creating!
